Rochester man charged after go-kart crash in Yates County

A Rochester man was charged with driving while intoxicated after deputies said he crashed a gas-powered go-kart Thursday night in Yates County.

Yates County deputies said M.K. Sheared, 64, was traveling west on Phelps Road in the town of Potter at about 10:47 p.m. when the go-kart left the road and rolled into a ditch.

Deputies responded with Potter Fire, Penn Yan Ambulance and Middlesex Ambulance for a reported motor vehicle crash with injuries, according to the Yates County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said Sheared showed signs of intoxication and was taken into custody. He was transported to the Yates County Jail to await CAP Court arraignment.

Sheared was charged with driving while intoxicated, third-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle, operating an unregistered motor vehicle and moving from a lane unsafely.

The sheriff's office said the arresting deputy was working the New York State STOP-DWI High Visibility Campaign.
