Syracuse men's soccer battled Wake Forest through a scoreless opening 75 minutes Saturday before surrendering two late goals in a 2-0 loss at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons controlled much of the offensive action, but Syracuse goalkeeper Juan Martinez-Bastidas kept the Orange within striking distance with a career-high eight saves. Kristin Middaugh and Aleena Solano provided the offense for William Smith, scoring just 27 seconds apart during the first half to establish an early two-goal advantage. Middaugh opened the scoring in the 18th minute, converting a pass from Addison Stockwin into her team-leading fifth goal of the season. Emily Fulton led William Smith offensively with 11 kills, four digs, two service aces and two blocks. Arielle Newsome added nine kills without an attack error, finishing with a .563 hitting percentage, three blocks and two service aces. The Herons established control early, recording 12 kills in the opening set. Cassidy Breuer and Newsome contributed four kills apiece as William Smith secured a 25-16 victory.
