According to the preliminary investigation, a 31-year-old man was riding north on State Route 48 when he failed to negotiate a turn, went onto the eastern shoulder and struck a utility pole.

Police said the man was alert when emergency responders arrived and was initially believed to have non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Oswego Hospital, where he later died from what police believe were internal injuries.

The rider was wearing a helmet, but police said it became dislodged during the crash.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office to determine the official cause and manner of death. State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation members responded to the scene, and the investigation remains ongoing.

Anyone with information about the crash, or who may have witnessed it, is asked to contact State Police in Fulton at 315-298-2112.
