Asteri Ithaca has filed 53 eviction cases against tenants in the months after city officials forced residents to temporarily leave the building over fire safety concerns, according to The Ithaca Voice.
Court calendar records reviewed by the outlet showed about 25 eviction cases filed in April and another 28 filed in June.
The cases follow months of scrutiny for the 12-story affordable housing complex, which was vacated in March after officials found fire safety issues.
Residents were displaced for about two weeks while The Vecino Group, the building’s Missouri-based owner, addressed violations.
The company has also faced criticism over maintenance, sanitation, utilities and tenant support at the downtown Ithaca building.
Legal Assistance of Western New York is representing many tenants, while local advocates said some residents have missed court dates or may not know what resources are available.
