Tompkins County funds housing legal aid

Tompkins County will put $50,000 toward legal assistance for residents facing eviction, displacement or other housing instability, according to the county.

The temporary program follows Ithaca’s order to vacate parts of the Asteri apartment building after unsafe conditions were identified by the city fire marshal.

County officials said the money will help qualified legal service providers offer advice and representation to eligible households with housing-related legal issues.

Legislature Chair Shawna Black said many residents are facing difficult housing situations without knowing what options or protections they have.

The county administrator and county attorney will create the funding and contracting process, coordinate with legal aid groups and distribute the money quickly.

Eligible providers have until July 17 to apply.
