Hospitals across New York are set to upgrade their digital systems after the state approved more than $300 million for health information technology and cybersecurity projects.
The funding will support 22 projects aimed at modernizing electronic medical records, strengthening cyber defenses, and expanding telehealth services at hospitals in every region of the state.
What the funding targets
The money comes through the Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program IV and V, which focuses on updating aging hospital infrastructure and improving patient care.
State officials say the projects prioritize hospitals facing financial strain, while also addressing growing concerns about data security and access to care. Many hospitals will use the funds to expand electronic medical records, protect patient information from cyber threats, and improve telehealth capabilities.
Cybersecurity and patient data
Cybersecurity plays a central role in this round of funding.
New York has already enacted nation-leading cybersecurity requirements for hospitals, and these investments aim to help facilities meet those standards. The projects focus on protecting sensitive patient data and strengthening systems against ransomware and other cyberattacks that increasingly target health care providers.
Health officials say stronger digital defenses also support better clinical decision-making by ensuring patient information remains accurate, accessible, and secure.
Telehealth and access to care
The funding also supports expanded telehealth services, which many hospitals rely on to reach patients in rural or underserved communities.
By improving digital infrastructure, hospitals can offer more remote visits, specialty consultations, and follow-up care without requiring patients to travel long distances.
A long-term investment
The latest awards build on a broader statewide push to strengthen health care delivery.
Since 2016, New York has directed more than $4.7 billion in health care capital funding through various transformation programs. The Statewide Health Care Facility Transformation Program alone has awarded more than $1.75 billion to providers working to improve access, equity, and quality of care.
State officials say the new investments will help hospitals modernize operations, protect patient information, and prepare for the future of health care delivery in New York.
