The Bath Police Department says charges are expected after responding to an incident connected to a civilian online predator sting that has circulated widely on social media.
Police confirmed they are investigating the case but cautioned the public that misinformation about the incident is already being shared online.
According to the department, the investigation stems from an incident that occurred July 19 in the Village of Bath involving Predator Poachers, a civilian vigilante organization that conducts online sting operations targeting adults suspected of attempting to solicit minors.
Police said a complainant associated with Predator Poachers contacted the department, prompting officers to respond. Authorities identified a suspect and opened an investigation after the organization turned over what police described as potential evidence of illegal activity gathered during one of its social media-based sting operations.
The investigation remains active, and police said criminal charges are expected. To protect the integrity of the case, no additional details are being released at this time.
The department also urged the public to rely on official updates rather than online speculation, warning that misinformation about the status of the investigation may continue to spread on social media.
