New York counties are preparing for millions of dollars in additional costs to administer the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program beginning Oct. 1, according to Spectrum News 1.
County officials say a federal funding cut will shift more of the program’s administrative costs to local governments.
The New York State Association of Counties estimates local taxpayers will have to cover $170 million in lost federal funding.
Schenectady County expects the first phase to cost about $1.2 million in the final quarter of 2026, with costs potentially reaching about $8 million by 2028.
County leaders say covering the gap could draw money from other local services as food banks report growing demand.
