Rob Shepherd has been promoted to deputy chief of the Ithaca Fire Department, effective Sept. 20. The city said he will help lead work on fire prevention, emergency preparedness and emergency management.
Shepherd was an assistant chief before the promotion and most recently served as fire marshal, according to the city's Monday announcement.
Fire Chief Mike Moody said Shepherd's work as fire marshal prepared him for a larger leadership role. Moody said the department plans to restructure its Fire Prevention Bureau and expand its role in comprehensive emergency management.
Moody said Shepherd had shown leadership and dedication during his service with the department. The promotion places him in a senior role as Ithaca works to broaden its fire-prevention and emergency-management efforts.
