The family of Robert Brooks has reached a $24 million settlement with New York state following his death after a beating at Marcy Correctional Facility, according to Spectrum News 1.
Brooks, 43, died Dec. 10, 2024, and the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
Body-camera footage released by the state attorney general’s office showed correction officers striking Brooks while he was restrained.
Several officers were convicted or entered plea agreements in cases connected to his death, while two were acquitted at trial.
Brooks’ relatives said the settlement does not end their push for changes in the prison system.
