FL1 5-day forecast: Showers and storms, followed by warming trend

Finger Lakes and Central New York see damp

A round of showers and thunderstorms will interrupt an otherwise quiet stretch of weather across the Finger Lakes and Central New York today, but the unsettled conditions won’t stick around for long. Forecasters say a cold front moving through the region will bring the best chance for rain and a few strong storms before high pressure gradually takes control heading into the weekend.

By early next week, the weather pattern shifts again. Temperatures will climb above seasonal averages, humidity will steadily increase, and parts of the region could experience the first prolonged stretch of summer heat in several weeks.

Storms arrive Thursday, with a few capable of producing damaging winds

The most active weather of the five-day period comes Thursday as a weak disturbance and advancing cold front sweep east across New York.

Showers are expected to become more widespread during the morning before another round of thunderstorms develops later in the afternoon and evening. The exact strength of those storms will depend on how much sunshine develops between rounds of rain, but forecasters say enough wind shear will be in place to support isolated strong thunderstorms if the atmosphere becomes unstable.

The primary concern across much of the Finger Lakes and Central New York will be damaging wind gusts, although small hail cannot be ruled out. The greatest severe weather threat appears to remain farther west across Western New York, where atmospheric conditions are expected to be slightly more favorable. Still, residents throughout the region should keep an eye on the forecast if they have outdoor plans Thursday afternoon or evening.

Rainfall is not expected to be widespread enough to create major flooding concerns, but locally heavy downpours could briefly reduce visibility and create ponding on roads during stronger storms.

Friday brings quieter weather, but not a perfect day

Behind Thursday’s cold front, noticeably drier air begins filtering into the region.

Most communities should enjoy longer periods of dry weather Friday, although the atmosphere won’t completely settle down. A few isolated showers may redevelop during the afternoon as lingering upper-level energy rotates through the Northeast.

Many locations will remain dry for much of the day, making Friday a solid recovery day after Thursday’s storms. Temperatures will remain comfortable, and humidity levels should stay in check before increasing later in the weekend.

Weekend forecast improves, but a few showers remain possible Saturday

The overall weather pattern becomes more favorable this weekend as high pressure starts building eastward.

Saturday still carries some uncertainty. Some forecast models keep enough moisture nearby for scattered showers, particularly across Central New York, while others shift the wetter weather farther south. At this point, scattered showers appear more likely than widespread rainfall, and thunderstorm chances look limited because atmospheric instability remains relatively weak.

By Sunday, confidence increases that much of the region will experience dry weather with a mix of sunshine and clouds. Temperatures will continue climbing while humidity remains relatively comfortable, creating one of the more pleasant days of the extended forecast.

Summer heat begins building early next week

The biggest story beyond the weekend may be the return of above-normal temperatures.

An expanding ridge of high pressure is expected to build across the eastern United States, allowing highs to climb well into the 80s across much of the Finger Lakes and Central New York. Some valley locations could approach or exceed 90 degrees by Tuesday if the warmer solutions verify.

Humidity is also expected to increase, making conditions feel progressively more summer-like after the comfortable weather expected this weekend.

There is still some uncertainty regarding exactly how hot it becomes. If the center of the ridge shifts farther west, disturbances riding along its northern edge could occasionally trigger thunderstorms while preventing temperatures from reaching their full potential. If the ridge settles farther east, a more prolonged stretch of heat would become increasingly likely.

What to watch over the next five days

Thursday remains the forecast period with the greatest potential for weather-related impacts. While widespread severe weather is not expected, any stronger storms could produce gusty winds, brief heavy rain, and isolated hail.

The weekend looks increasingly favorable for outdoor activities, especially Sunday, although Saturday still carries a low chance of scattered showers depending on the track of a nearby weather system.

Looking beyond the weekend, attention quickly turns to building heat and humidity. If current trends continue, next week’s forecast could feature the warmest temperatures the Finger Lakes and Central New York have experienced so far this summer.

As always, forecast details will continue to evolve over the next several days, particularly regarding Thursday’s storm strength and the intensity of next week’s heat, but the overall pattern is becoming increasingly clear: one more round of unsettled weather before summer takes firm control.
