Newark police chief announces retirement

The longtime leader of the Newark Police Department is stepping down after years of service to the village.

Police Chief Rich Martin is retiring after overseeing the department during a period of staffing changes and officer recruitment, village officials said.

During his tenure, Martin managed the retirement of veteran officers while helping recruit and train new members of the department, according to village officials.

Mayor Jonathan Taylor thanked Martin for his service.

“We are grateful for his dedicated service to the Newark Police Department and the Village has been fortunate to have him on our team,” Taylor said.

Police Commissioner Stu Blodgett also praised Martin’s leadership.

“Rich Martin has earned this retirement. He has done a tremendous job here as Chief of the Newark Police Department and has left us in great shape going forward,” Blodgett said.

State Sen. Pam Helming and Assemblyman Brian Manktelow also thanked Martin for his service to the community and wished him well in retirement.
