Crash on Thruway kills Palmyra driver

A rear-end crash between two tractor-trailers on the New York State Thruway left one driver dead early March 5 in Oneida County.

State Police identified the victim as Robert G. Wells, 76, of Palmyra.

Troopers responded around 1:25 a.m. to the westbound lanes of the Thruway in the town of Westmoreland.

Investigators said a tractor-trailer hauling an empty car carrier was traveling in the right lane when a second tractor-trailer struck the rear of the hauler.

Police said Ahmad Riyad Alomori, 42, of New Jersey, was driving the car carrier at the time of the crash.

The impact pushed both vehicles onto the right shoulder of the highway.

Wells died at the scene, according to State Police.

Alomori suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Emergency crews transported him to Wynn Hospital for evaluation.

Troopers did not release additional details about what led to the collision.
