A former professional boxer who now lives with Parkinson’s syndrome and dementia linked to repeated head trauma will speak at Keuka College next month about the long-term impact of concussions.
Ray Ciancaglini will headline “Concussions & The Impact” on Monday, March 9, at Norton Chapel on the Keuka Park campus. Doors open at 5 p.m., and the program begins at 5:30 p.m.
Ciancaglini will appear alongside Dr. Jeff Bazarian, a concussion expert, and physical therapist Tom DelPapa for a discussion on untreated concussions, long-term neurological damage and the importance of early intervention.
Jeff Bray, Keuka’s associate director of athletics for facilities and alumni relations and head athletic trainer, will facilitate the event.
Ciancaglini has said his life changed after sustaining numerous untreated concussions during his boxing career. He later developed Parkinson’s syndrome and dementia pugilistica. He founded The Second Impact to raise awareness about brain injuries and encourage athletes to report symptoms.
Organizers said the event will cover the science behind concussions, the risks of repeated head trauma and the need for earlier diagnosis and treatment.
The college is inviting students, athletes, medical professionals and community members to attend.
