Fire department raffle aims to help Seneca Falls firefighter

A custom leather fire helmet raffle is raising money to support a Seneca Falls firefighter facing serious medical challenges.

The Seneca Falls Fire Department announced the fundraiser to help Mike Richards, a longtime member of the department who has been unable to work while battling multiple illnesses.

Richards has spent the past two years fighting metastatic prostate cancer. He also lives with ischemic white matter disease and was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The department said the medical challenges have created financial hardship for his family.

To help, Greg from RedHook Leather Lids LLC donated a brand new N5A leather fire helmet and his company’s services for the raffle. The helmet has a stated value of $1,300, with an additional $300 in customization included.

The winner will receive a free repaint in the color of their choice, custom helmet tets, and a deep suspension upgrade. The fire department said the helmet raffle is open to anyone 18 or older.

Tickets cost $35 each, with 140 spots available. Organizers will announce the winner Thursday, Feb. 26, at 6 p.m. The winner does not need to be present. The department said 100 percent of the money raised will go directly to Richards.

People can purchase tickets using Cash App, Venmo, or cash for local buyers. Anyone interested can text Captain Greg Donato at 315-237-3789 for tickets or more information.
