Ithaca eyes faster approvals to boost “missing middle” housing

City planners are pushing a streamlined review process to encourage smaller-scale housing projects that fall between single-family homes and large apartment buildings, according to The Ithaca Voice.

The proposed changes would let residential developments with up to 14 units skip full Planning Board review, as long as they meet zoning rules. Officials hope this will cut red tape and lower costs, making mid-density housing more feasible. The plan also simplifies city code to help non-experts navigate the system.

A public hearing on the proposal is set for Nov. 19. Planners say it could help ease the city’s housing crunch.
