Vice President Kamala Harris will attend the funeral of Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, on Thursday, honoring her longtime friend and sorority sister from Alpha Kappa Alpha. Jackson Lee passed away this month at 74 after battling cancer.
Harris and Jackson Lee bonded over their work as elected officials and shared legislative goals, including reauthorizing the Violence Against Women Act and making Juneteenth a federal holiday. Harris described Jackson Lee as a “tenacious advocate for justice” and a dedicated leader for Houston.
Despite her busy schedule as the Democratic front-runner, Harris is committed to paying her respects. This will be her third visit to Texas in the last month, underscoring her deep connection to the state and its leaders.
