Two correction officers were injured during a struggle with an incarcerated person at Marcy Correctional Facility, including one officer who suffered a fractured ankle, according to the union representing state correction officers. The incident occurred July 7 after staff tried to remove the person from a mess hall and conduct a pat frisk.
The New York State Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association said the person refused orders and took an aggressive stance. Officers used body holds and pepper spray before handcuffing the person and taking him to the infirmary for decontamination.
The union said the person became combative again when officers tried to remove him from a transport van at the infirmary. Additional officers restrained him on the ground before he became compliant and was taken inside for evaluation.
One officer assigned to the mess hall suffered facial injuries, while an infirmary officer sustained the ankle injury. Both were taken to Wynn Hospital, where the ankle fracture was diagnosed.
Union regional vice president Bryan Hluska said the officers responded professionally and renewed the union's call for more staffing and resources in state prisons.
