Employees help contain fire at Genoa dairy facility

Employees at a dairy operation in Genoa helped prevent a smoldering fire from spreading by calling 911, beginning fire suppression and evacuating the building, according to the Genoa Volunteer Fire Department. Firefighters were dispatched shortly after noon to a barn along Route 34.

The department said crews found a fire in an overhead crawl space in the dairy's milking facility. Investigators determined that heat and flames from an overheated vacuum pump exhaust had reached rafters and debris above the equipment room.

Genoa firefighters responded with automatic mutual aid from King Ferry, Moravia and Southern Cayuga Instant Aid. After the fire was located, King Ferry units continued to the scene while the other mutual aid companies were released.

Crews extinguished the remaining fire and used a thermal imaging camera to confirm it had not spread. The Genoa department said its units were back in service by 1:30 p.m.

No injuries were reported in the department's account.
