State police recover body of man from Little Sodus Bay

State police recovered the body of a 70-year-old man from Little Sodus Bay after he went underwater during a boating incident Tuesday afternoon in Fair Haven. A 69-year-old woman who entered the water to help him was rescued by a nearby boater.

Police said the man entered the water from a boat to cool off around 3:30 p.m. High winds pushed the boat away, leaving him unable to return before he went under and did not resurface.

The State Police Underwater Recovery Team later located and recovered the man. The Cayuga County coroner responded to the scene.

The search involved the Fair Haven Volunteer Fire Department, Cayuga and Wayne county sheriff's offices, the U.S. Coast Guard and state police. Fair Haven Village Ambulance, the Ira Fire Department and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office aviation unit also assisted.

Police said the investigation remains ongoing.
