New York has opened applications for a tax credit aimed at helping manufacturers train workers for semiconductor and other high-demand manufacturing jobs. The Semiconductor Manufacturing Workforce Training Incentive Program will be administered by Empire State Development.
The state said credits can cover up to 75% of eligible training costs, including employee wages during training, curriculum development, instructors and qualifying support services. The benefit is capped at $25,000 for each employee receiving eligible training.
Eligible semiconductor manufacturers may receive up to $5 million over the life of the program. Other qualifying manufacturers may receive up to $1 million.
Businesses must operate in New York, receive approval for a workforce training plan before training begins and comply with worker protection and environmental requirements. Training may be provided by employers, third parties or state registered apprenticeship programs.
The program is part of the state's broader semiconductor workforce strategy, which includes four advanced manufacturing training centers planned through the $200 million ON-RAMP initiative. One of those centers is planned for Syracuse's South Side.
