Toxic blooms hitting Cayuga Lake earlier

Harmful algal blooms are showing up months earlier and lingering deeper into the fall on Cayuga Lake, according to Tompkins Weekly. Scientists confirmed a bloom in April this year — the earliest recorded on the lake — after the first bloom wasn’t reported until July last year.

Health officials warn swimmers and pet owners to avoid any water that looks like paint, pea soup or thick green streaks. Experts say toxic blooms can cause illness in people and pose an even greater risk to dogs, which often ingest contaminated water while swimming.

Researchers say warmer temperatures, longer summers and nutrient runoff are contributing to longer bloom seasons. Officials are urging residents to report sightings, stay informed about bloom conditions, and keep pets and people out of suspicious-looking water.
