A billion-dollar rebate program is heading to New Yorkers’ mailboxes even as RG&E and NYSEG customers brace for higher utility bills, according to News10NBC. Gov. Kathy Hochul defended the state’s new POWER rebate checks during a Rochester visit, arguing the payments will help offset rising energy costs.
Most full-time New York residents who filed 2024 taxes qualify for the rebates. Joint filers earning under $150,000 will receive $200, while single filers earning under $150,000 will get $100.
Hochul also addressed pending utility rate increases, saying regulators rejected a proposed 33% hike and imposed a lower temporary increase. She pointed to new ratepayer protections, expanded energy supply, and potential nuclear development in upstate New York as part of a broader strategy to control long-term costs.
