Elevated water levels across Cayuga County are prompting officials to urge caution for anyone heading out on the water.
The sheriff’s office says recent rainfall has pushed lakes and rivers higher than normal, increasing the risk of shoreline damage and hidden hazards.
Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck is advising boaters to observe a no-wake zone within 500 feet of shore on Cross Lake, the Seneca River, and other area waterways where levels remain high.
Authorities warn that high water can amplify the impact of boat wakes on shorelines, potentially causing erosion and property damage. Boaters are also being cautioned to watch for floating debris and other hazards that may not be visible from the surface.
Officials said anyone using local waterways should reduce speed near shore and operate with added awareness until water levels recede.
