NY bill targets rising pet costs: Here’s how it would work

Pet owners in New York could soon get financial relief at tax time, according to RochesterFirst, as lawmakers consider a new credit for everyday and medical pet expenses.

The proposal would allow up to $150 per pet for supplies like food and grooming, plus up to $300 for vet care. The total credit would cap at $900 annually and apply to up to two pets per household.

The bill defines eligible pets as cats and dogs kept for companionship and would require proof of expenses. Lawmakers are still reviewing the measure, with potential rollout starting in the 2026 tax year if approved.
