Grocery store wine sales push hits familiar roadblocks

Lawmakers are reviving a long-running fight over wine in grocery stores, but resistance isn’t going away, according to Capital Tonight. A new bill from Liz Krueger and Pamela Hunter would allow wine sales in supermarkets, while a separate proposal goes further to include liquor.

Supporters, including grocery groups, argue the change would boost convenience and competition. But liquor store owners, represented by the Metropolitan Package Store Association, warn it could hurt small businesses that rely on exclusive sales.

The debate has dragged on for years without resolution, and with competing bills again on the table, lawmakers still face the same divide between industry interests and consumer access.
