Farmington man charged in federal child pornography case

A Farmington man classified as a level 3 sex offender is facing new federal charges after investigators allegedly found hundreds of illicit images and videos on his phone.

Robert Carrigan, 54, has been charged with distribution, receipt, and possession of child pornography following a multi-agency investigation, according to federal prosecutors.

Authorities said the case began in December 2024 when the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children received a tip about a Snapchat user sharing suspected child pornography in a private message. Investigators traced the account to Carrigan through associated contact information.

A search warrant executed at Carrigan’s home in July 2025 led to the seizure of a cell phone containing approximately 277 images and three videos, some of which allegedly involved prepubescent minors and violent content.

Prosecutors noted Carrigan has a prior conviction from 2004 related to child sexual abuse and is classified as a high-risk, level 3 sex offender.

Carrigan has been arrested and is scheduled to return to court on April 28. If convicted, he faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in prison, with a maximum of up to 40 years, along with potential fines.
