Livingston expands fiber internet buildout

Thousands of homes and businesses in Livingston County could soon gain access to high-speed fiber internet as a major broadband expansion moves forward.

County officials say the Light Up Livingston initiative is extending service to parts of Livonia, Lima, Mount Morris, Nunda and Springwater.

Crews have already installed 68 miles of aerial fiber as part of the project’s main network backbone.

Officials expect work connecting individual homes and businesses to begin in summer and fall 2026. Crews will continue installing additional lines and connecting lateral cables to the main fiber ring before those service connections begin.

The project aims to bring high-speed internet access to every address in Livingston County.

The effort is funded through a grant from New York State’s ConnectALL Municipal Infrastructure Program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s ReConnect program.

Livingston County partnered with Empire Fiber Internet and Hunt Engineers, Architects & Surveyors to build the fiber network.

County Administrator Shannon Hillier said the project represents a milestone in expanding broadband access across rural areas of the county.

“We’ve combined resources and a shared vision to continue expanding high-speed internet access to all communities in Livingston County,” Hillier said.

Empire Fiber Internet CEO Kevin Dickens said construction crews are continuing to expand the network across the county.

“Our team is hard at work extending our fiber network throughout Livingston County,” Dickens said.

Officials say the multi-year project is designed to expand reliable and affordable internet service in underserved areas.
