A Horseheads woman has been arrested following an investigation into the theft of funds from a local nonprofit organization, according to New York State Police.
Karen L. Curtis, 58, was charged March 9 with third-degree grand larceny, a class D felony.
State police said the investigation began Feb. 13 after members of the nonprofit reported suspected fraudulent financial activity involving the organization’s treasurer.
An internal audit conducted by the group determined that more than $11,000 had been taken through unauthorized checks and credit card transactions beginning in 2023.
Curtis voluntarily appeared at the State Police barracks in Horseheads on March 9, where she was arrested and processed without incident.
She was arraigned in Big Flats Town Court and released on her own recognizance.
Curtis is scheduled to return to court April 6 at 2:30 p.m. The investigation remains ongoing.
