Gallahan comments on Auburn prison assault

Assemblyman Jeff Gallahan issued a statement following an attack at Auburn Correctional Facility that left five correction officers injured earlier this month.

The incident occurred March 2 during evening movement for dinner inside the facility.

According to reports cited by Gallahan, a 49-year-old inmate first punched a correction officer who was monitoring inmate movement.

The inmate then used a sharpened metal weapon to stab another officer multiple times before officers restrained him.

Four officers sustained injuries to the knee, shoulder, hand and thumb but remained on duty.

The officer who was stabbed was transported to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment of puncture wounds and other injuries.

Gallahan said the incident highlights concerns about safety conditions inside state prisons and noted that correction officers have raised similar concerns in the past.
