Western New York’s two congressmen split sharply over a GOP voter ID bill, according to Spectrum News.
The Republican-led House passed the SAVE America Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register and government-issued photo ID to vote. Rep. Nick Langworthy backs the measure and says Americans already show ID for everyday tasks. Rep. Tim Kennedy calls it voter suppression and warns it would force states to share voter rolls with Homeland Security.
Federal law already bars noncitizens from voting. The bill faces steep odds in the Senate unless Republicans change filibuster rules, a move party leaders have hesitated to make.
