Auburn warns residents about frozen pipes

City officials are urging Auburn residents and business owners to take steps now to prevent frozen water pipes as extreme cold grips the area.

The City of Auburn Department of Municipal Utilities issued a public notice this week warning that prolonged below-normal temperatures have increased the risk of frozen water service lines across the city.

Officials said temperatures are expected to remain only in the high teens for the next two weeks, making frozen pipes a serious concern. The department has already thawed a frozen water line this week, the first such incident since 2022.

Residents and property owners are encouraged to take precautions, including running a small, continuous flow of water, especially in buildings where pipes have frozen before. Officials recommend a pencil-sized stream of water.

The city also advises keeping indoor plumbing warm, leaving cabinet doors open to allow heat to circulate, insulating exposed pipes and service lines, sealing air leaks near foundations and pipe entry points, and maintaining heat in unoccupied buildings.

City officials say these steps can help prevent service disruptions and avoid costly repairs during the cold snap. Anyone with questions or concerns can contact Tom Gabak with the Department of Municipal Utilities by email or phone for more information.
