Lyons schools condemn racist remark after game

A racist remark directed at a student-athlete after a boys’ basketball game has drawn a strong response from the Lyons Central School District.

District leaders said they became aware of the incident following the team’s most recent game, where a racist comment targeted one of their students. The district did not describe the remark or identify who made it.

In a written statement, Superintendent Dr. Matthew Barr said no student should ever face language or behavior that threatens their dignity or safety. He called the incident painful and unacceptable.

Barr also praised the response from York Central School District and its superintendent, saying they acted quickly and made clear the behavior does not reflect their school community.

The statement went on to recognize Lyons’ coaches, students, and community members for how they handled the moment. Barr said they showed composure and chose to represent the district with integrity and respect, even under difficult circumstances.

He said that response reflects values the district works to instill and a culture focused on doing the right thing.
