Hochul targets vapes with new taxes

Vaping products could soon cost more statewide as New York moves to crack down on illegal sales, according to RochesterFirst.

Under Gov. Kathy Hochul’s proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget, the state would add a new 55-cent distributor fee on every vape product sold in New York. The plan also creates a mandatory state vaping registry, making any unlisted product illegal contraband subject to seizure.

The proposal expands tobacco taxes to include nicotine pouches and lozenges, generating an estimated $18 million by 2027. The plan now heads to lawmakers for budget negotiations.
