MTA backs Hochul insurance overhaul

New York transit leaders are backing Gov. Kathy Hochul’s push to overhaul auto insurance laws, arguing the current system unfairly burdens taxpayers, according to Spectrum News.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority says it often pays full damages after crashes even when bus drivers hold only a small share of fault. Hochul’s proposal aims to limit payouts tied to fraud, uninsured drivers, and how “serious” injuries are defined.

Supporters say the changes could save drivers about $200 a year. Critics, including trial lawyers, argue the plan favors insurance companies and could weaken New Yorkers’ legal rights.
