Immigration fight defines New York governor race

A fatal ICE shooting and Trump’s crackdown have turned immigration into a political flashpoint, according to Spectrum News. Republican challenger Bruce Blakeman embraced tougher enforcement while attacking Gov. Kathy Hochul for limiting federal agents.

Blakeman backed increased deportations and defended an ICE officer who shot a woman in Minneapolis, saying strong enforcement keeps communities safe. He also supported President Donald Trump’s threat to cut funding to sanctuary cities like New York.

Hochul moved the opposite direction, proposing limits on ICE access to schools, hospitals, and houses of worship. Her campaign blasted Blakeman’s stance, warning it would strip protections and expand federal power.
