The New York Yankees’ bid for a sweep in Boston fell apart early on Sunday night as a disastrous first inning doomed them in a 6-4 loss to the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
Starter Will Warren surrendered six runs, all in the first, but still made it through five innings. Giancarlo Stanton misplayed a first-inning fly ball that led to a leadoff triple and helped fuel Boston’s big inning.
Aaron Judge hit his 48th home run of the season, and Amed Rosario and José Caballero also went deep as the Yankees cut the deficit to two, but stranded the tying run at the plate in the eighth after Judge’s leadoff single.Â
Camilo Doval, Mark Leiter Jr., and Paul Blackburn combined for three scoreless innings out of the bullpen to keep the Yankees within striking distance.
Garrett Crochet struck out 12 over six innings for Boston, and Aroldis Chapman recorded the save.
The loss dropped New York to 83-66 while Boston moved to 82-68, tightening the American League wild-card race.
