Flags across New York are flying at half-staff today to honor West Colesville Fire Chief James Sitek, who died in the line of duty on July 4, according to the USA Today. Sitek collapsed from a medical emergency while battling a house fire in Conklin.
A 35-year veteran of the fire service, Sitek joined the West Colesville Fire Company in 1990 and became chief in 2022. Known for his humility and leadership, he was deeply respected by colleagues statewide.
Governor Kathy Hochul praised his bravery and legacy, calling him “one of New York State’s bravest.” Sitek’s funeral takes place today, followed by burial and a community reception.
