New York is nearing the end of a $450 million overhaul of its Thruway rest stops, with 26 out of 27 now renovated, according to the New York State Thruway Authority.
Despite the upgrades, some travelers say the new buildings are cramped and poorly designed. The project, launched in 2021 with Empire State Thruway Partners, aimed to improve food options and modernize the facilities. However, complaints about long bathroom lines and confusing layouts persist.
Only the Modena location remains under construction as the summer travel season kicks off. While state officials claim the changes are an improvement, several road trippers say the older rest stops were more comfortable and better suited to their needs.
