EPA delays PFAS cleanup deadline, draws criticism

New York environmental advocates are pushing back after the EPA extended the deadline for water utilities to meet limits on toxic PFAS chemicals, according to Spectrum News.

The Trump administration’s EPA kept Biden-era standards for two key PFAS compounds but gave utilities until 2031 to comply. It also weakened rules for other PFAS chemicals, a move advocates say puts public health at risk, especially in communities like Hoosick Falls that previously faced contamination crises.

Environmental Advocates NY warned the rollback could stall vital protections for residents exposed to chemicals linked to cancer and organ damage. Critics say delaying enforcement will allow harmful substances to persist in drinking water far longer than necessary.
