Mets comeback bid falls short in one-run loss to Diamondbacks (highlights)

The New York Mets (21-10) saw their eight-game home winning streak come to an end on Wednesday night, falling to the Arizona Diamondbacks (16-14) 4-3 at Citi Field.

New York opened with a bullpen game, and Huascar Brazobán was impressive as the opener, throwing two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and one walk. Despite a strong start, the Mets failed to capitalize on early opportunities. In the first inning, a bases-loaded jam set up by Francisco Lindor’s double and two walks came to nothing when Corbin Burnes escaped the threat.

Mark Vientos broke the deadlock with a solo home run in the third, but the Mets couldn’t make much more of a dent in Burnes’ outing. Despite walking five batters, Burnes managed to limit the damage to just Vientos’ blast over six innings. The Mets had runners on base but left seven stranded, failing to take advantage.

Brandon Waddell, recalled from Triple-A, delivered an outstanding 4.1 shutout innings in relief, but trouble struck in the seventh as Ryan Stanek allowed two runs off a two-out rally from Arizona’s bottom three hitters.

Down 4-1 in the ninth, the Mets fought back with a solo shot from Tyrone Taylor and a bases-loaded threat, but fell short when Francisco Alvarez grounded out with the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

The Mets left 13 runners on base and went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
