A controversial effort to relax curriculum standards for New York’s nonpublic schools remains under negotiation in closed-door budget talks, according to a Spectrum News report. The proposal could loosen rules requiring private schools to meet public education benchmarks, particularly in math, English, science, and history.
Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie said he’s open to discussion, though he’s made no commitments. Meanwhile, strong opposition is growing in the Senate, with lawmakers like Liz Krueger warning that political pressure shouldn’t override educational quality for children.
Gov. Kathy Hochul declined to share her position, while education groups and lawmakers urged caution, noting a key state report on underperforming schools is due in June.
