Lawmakers push to close Marcy Correctional after inmate death

New York lawmakers are calling for the closure of Marcy Correctional Facility following the death of Robert Brooks, who was allegedly beaten by officers while handcuffed.

Led by Assemblyman Eddie Gibbs and Sen. Julia Salazar, about 30 legislators are demanding immediate action, arguing closure is necessary to address systemic abuse. Others, like Assemblywoman Michaelle Solages, advocate for broader reforms, including body cameras, staff training, and protections for whistleblowers.

While some lawmakers oppose closing Marcy outright, bipartisan discussions are underway to improve accountability and prevent future violence in state prisons.
