A Steuben County man has been handed a 15-year prison sentence for a rape that occurred in January 2023. The verdict was announced Wednesday, with Chevis G. Sargent, 27, being sentenced to serve his time in a New York State prison.
Following his prison term, Sargent faces up to 20 years of probation, as disclosed by Chemung County District Attorney, Weeden Wetmore.
During the sentencing, Judge Richard W. Rich Jr. pointedly addressed the court, highlighting the strength of the evidence presented during the trial. “The evidence, quite frankly, was overwhelming,” Rich stated. He further criticized Sargent’s apparent lack of remorse, noting the profound impact on the victim, who continues to grapple with the aftermath of the crime. “This is a case where an actual human being was really hurt and continues to suffer as a result,” he remarked.
Sargent’s arrest came promptly after the crime, with New York State Police detaining him on January 25, 2023, just two days post the incident in Horseheads.
