Schools, bridges and other facilities built through New Deal programs remain in use across Steuben County nearly a century later, according to The Spectator.
Surviving projects include the Painted Post post office, Corning’s Bridge Street bridge and hospital, nursing care and entrance bridge facilities at the Bath VA.
Federal assistance also supported school construction in Hornell, Canisteo, Arkport, Avoca and other communities.
Arkport Dam became a priority after the 1935 flood, while other projects improved flood protection, water systems, roads and park infrastructure.
Programs including the Public Works Administration, Works Progress Administration and Civilian Conservation Corps provided employment and training during the Great Depression.
