Tompkins County legislators approved an online registry of people convicted of qualifying animal abuse offenses, according to The Ithaca Voice.
The sheriff’s office will maintain the county website’s listings, which will include names, addresses and photographs to help shelters and others screen prospective adopters.
People covered by the law must register within 30 days of conviction or moving into the county and report address changes.
The law covers 22 offenses and generally requires five years on the registry, with provisions allowing earlier removal.
Failure to register, update information or provide truthful details could result in a fine of up to $500.
