Seneca County sheriff warns businesses about cash audit scam

The Seneca County Sheriff's Office is warning local businesses about a scam in which a caller poses as a sheriff's employee and asks to inspect cash behind the business. The sheriff's office said the caller falsely claims the business was randomly selected for an audit of paper money because of an increase in counterfeit bills.

After asking a series of questions, the scammer tells the business that someone will come to the store and asks the business to meet behind the building with bills so they can be checked, according to the sheriff's office.

The sheriff's office said it would never call and request that type of action.

Businesses that receive such a call should not provide information about how much cash is on hand, officials said.

If the caller says someone is coming to the business, the sheriff's office said the recipient should write down the phone number, hang up and call 911.
