Ontario County residents have reported calls from someone claiming to be a sheriff's deputy and demanding payment for a family member's bail.
The Ontario County Sheriff's Office said neither its deputies nor any court will request or demand bail payments over the phone.
Officials warned residents not to provide personal information or send money if they receive such a call. The callers may request payment through various methods while falsely presenting themselves as law enforcement.
Anyone who receives a suspicious call should hang up and contact the Sheriff's Office directly at 585-394-4560 to verify the request or ask questions.
The Sheriff's Office also urged residents to share the warning with friends and family to help prevent others from falling victim to the scheme.
