Police agencies can apply for new round of law enforcement technology grants

Police departments and sheriffs' offices across New York can apply for a new round of state grants aimed at modernizing law enforcement technology and equipment.

Governor Kathy Hochul announced a $100 million public safety technology investment July 6, including $75 million through the Law Enforcement Technology Grant Program and $25 million for a new statewide records management system.

The LETECH grants are available to village, town, city and tribal police departments and county sheriffs' offices outside New York City. About 500 agencies are eligible to apply, according to the governor's office.

Eligible purchases include acoustic gunshot detection systems, drones, counter-drone systems, 3D crime scene scanners, trauma kits, automated external defibrillators, body-worn cameras, vests, traffic and safety equipment, lighting, records management systems and patrol or officer equipment.

Agencies also may seek funding for equipment and technology supporting 911 centers, emergency management operations, parking and code enforcement and community communication platforms.

The state Division of Criminal Justice Services will administer the grants. Maximum awards will be based on the number of full-time equivalent sworn officers, ranging from $100,000 for agencies with 10 or fewer officers to $6 million for agencies with more than 1,001 officers.

The additional $25 million will fund a statewide records management system intended to replace an older platform, improve information sharing and streamline reporting. The system will be available to law enforcement agencies statewide, including more than 150 smaller and rural departments that state officials said have lacked resources to modernize.

Applications are due by noon Sept. 2. Awards are expected in early fall, and contracts will run from Jan. 1, 2027, through Dec. 31, 2028.
