Mets hold off Braves to end losing streak

The New York Mets ended their losing streak Sunday with a wild 10-9 victory over the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, using an early offensive outburst and surviving a late rally to improve their record to 37-53 while earning their first win of the series. After building multiple leads throughout the afternoon, the Mets watched Atlanta bring the tying and winning runs into scoring position in the ninth before escaping to halt their slide.

New York wasted little time getting on the board, stringing together three straight hits to open the game before Bo Bichette delivered an RBI single. Atlanta answered with three runs in the first inning, but A.J. Ewing’s solo homer and RBI hits from Francisco Lindor and Juan Soto quickly put the Mets back in front.

Rookie right-hander Nolan McLean settled in after the opening frame, retiring seven consecutive batters during one stretch and finishing with three runs allowed, two earned, on five hits with five strikeouts over 6.0-plus innings. Defensive miscues by Mark Vientos led to both of Atlanta’s unearned runs, but McLean worked around the mistakes to keep New York in control.

Luke Weaver added another scoreless outing, extending his streak without allowing a run to 25 innings before the Mets appeared to put the game away with five runs in the ninth.

Tyrone Taylor homered, Bichette cleared the bases with a double and Jared Young added a two-run single, but Atlanta nearly erased the cushion after Huascar Brazoban surrendered five runs and Devin Williams inherited a tense situation. Williams recorded the final out with Dominic Smith striking out to preserve the victory.

Lindor, Soto and Bichette combined to go 6-for-13 with six RBI and three runs scored.
